I'm a classroom teacher. Where do I start?

Schoolrunner is a powerful system that allows you to track all kinds of school data and make smart decisions to improve attendance, academics, and school culture. With so many different ways to use Schoolrunner though, it can be hard to know where to start. As a classroom teacher, entering and tracking data is just one of the many things on your plate.

This article aims to serve as a guide to some of Schoolrunner's features that may be most helpful to you. Each section below contains links to in-depth articles. Note that when specific pages are mentioned, they're followed by instructions for finding the page. For example, if you see (Academics/Gradebook), it means that you should hover over the "Academics" menu at the top of the page and click on "Gradebook". One more tip: Make sure you focus on the parts of Schoolrunner that your school is utilizing; there's a lot of functionality in Schoolrunner so zooming in on the most critical parts is a good first step!

Entering Assessments

The two most common ways to enter assessments into Schoolrunner are via Gradebook (Academics/Gradebook) and via the full Add Assessment page (Academics/Add Assessment). Using Gradebook to add an assessment is best if you're looking for a quick way to enter in scores, and using the full Add Assessment page is best for logging assessments with multiple questions or using more advanced options and entry methods.

For speed and convenience, Gradebook might be best for you, but our GradeCam feature is also really helpful for entering student results on more complex assessments.

Viewing All of My Assessments

As you get into the groove of logging assessments within Schoolrunner, it's always a good idea to keep track of everything you've entered.

There are a few ways to do this, but one of the easiest is to use the Assessments page (Academics/Assessments). Note that when you use this page, our system will generally put your name automatically in the "Teacher" dropdown. You can select your name if it's not there already. Another important thing to remember about this page is that it will default to the current grading period, so if you want to view assessments  from last quarter, you may have to adjust the filters on the left.

Lastly, the list of assessments you see will be active assessments. If you want to view assessments that have been deactivated/deleted, scroll to the bottom of the filter options. This can be helpful if you know you entered an assessment but you're having trouble tracking it down. (One way that teachers unintentionally delete their assessments is by clicking the X in Gradebook to remove a particular assessment from view.)

Using Gradebook is a great way to look at all of your assessments too. Make sure you're in "Timeline" view and you'll get a chronological listing of all the assessments in your course for whatever grading period you choose.

If you're looking for a specific assessment, you can use the Quick Search (magnifying glass icon) to locate the assessment by name. Click on the result to view the full assessment results.

Analyzing Assessment Results

Another way to view all your assessments, and the results that your students earned on them, is on the Analysis page (Analysis/Analysis). Read this article to learn how to set up a basic report using the "Student Assessment Scores" dataset.

If you're more interested in detailed results for a single assessment, you can use the analysis functions on the full assessments results page. Navigate to that assessment (try using the Quick Search, as described above) and then follow these instructions.

Taking Class Attendance

Class attendance lets you track which students are showing up to your class and which aren't. The Class Attendance page (Attendance/Class Attendance) has a lot of convenient functions built into it, so even if your school doesn't have a policy for taking class attendance, it can still be useful to use this page for keeping track of which students have earned merits or demerits, giving new merits or demerits, seeing who has detention to serve, seeing a quick summary of academic performance, or even for using Projector Mode.

Monitoring My Homeroom/Advisory

If you're responsible for a homeroom or advisory group, you want to be able to look up their grades and information quickly and easily. If your homeroom group is already synced in to Schoolrunner, you can find it by typing its name into the Quick Search. (If your homeroom hasn't been synced in, contact your Schoolrunner administrator.)

Clicking on the result will show you a list of students in your group. You can also type the group name into any menu where groups can be selected, such as on the student dashboard (Analysis/Student Dashboard), the Detention page (Culture/Detention), or even in filters on the Analysis page.

Logging Behaviors

Tracking behaviors is one of the most important goals for many schools. There are many ways to do this in Schoolrunner, including with our mobile app. Our Behaviors page (Culture/Behaviors) provides for the most powerful, flexible way of doing this though.
