I'm a dean of behavior. Where do I start?

Behavior systems are a large part of Schoolrunner, and can be configured many different ways in order to meet many different needs. If you haven't already talked with a School Happiness Coordinator about the best options for your school, reach out to [e-mail]. 

Set Up Behaviors and Behavior Systems

To ensure that Schoolrunner comes as close as possible to accommodating your school's behavior system, there are many things to consider. This is best done with someone from the Schoolrunner team, but in a nutshell, behavior system setup can be broken down into two steps:

1. Create a list of behavior types – these are the behaviors that will be available to your staff (things like "Out of Uniform", "Chewing Gum", or "Study Hall Points"). Teachers will assign these to students throughout the day via the Schoolrunner website or mobile app. 
2. Set attributes for your behavior types – each behavior can have several attributes: it can count as positive or negative points, or contribute towards earning a detention, for example. This is a major piece in your behavior system.

Assign Behaviors to Students

There are several places throughout Schoolrunner where behaviors can be given to kids, from the powerful Behaviors page to the speedy mobile app. As students accrue behaviors, they'll also accrue points, demerits, and detentions, depending upon how you configured your behavior types and your behavior system. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with giving behaviors so that you can support your teachers, some of whom may prefer one type of entry to another. Although using the mobile app and the Behaviors page are the most obvious methods for entering behaviors, it's also possible to log them on the Class Attendance page and the Add Assessment page.

Manage Detention

Schoolrunner can support up to three detention systems. Once students earn detention, it's important for someone to monitor which students attend and which don't, and properly log these observations in Schoolrunner. Configure Dynamic Groups

Schoolrunner's Groups page can be really useful for monitoring student behaviors. Use the filters to create group parameters and Schoolrunner will automatically add and remove students to groups for you. You can then see which students are members on the homepage and elsewhere throughout Schoolrunner.

Analyze Behavior Data

You can use the Analysis page to create charts and pivot tables that tell you about trends in the behavior data logged in Schoolrunner. Once you've configured a report that you find helpful, be sure to save it for easy reference later on. You can also share it to others right within Schoolrunner if you think other people might find it useful as well.

Automate Yourself With Scheduled Tasks

Scheduled tasks can help make your job easier by automatically resetting cash values, detention values, or by automatically applying behaviors such as deposits or rewards. This can happen on a daily or weekly basis, or you can schedule one-time tasks for any point in the future. Make sure you have groups set up if you want to target specific students for scheduled tasks.
